What Are the Different Types of Dental Implants?

A dental implant does not have only one course of treatment. After a comprehensive evaluation, your surgeon will help you determine what type of implant you need and the best manner of treatment.

The type of treatment is based on how many teeth need to be replaced in your mouth. Your surgeon may opt for a single implant procedure to replace one tooth at a time. Hopefully, that will be the full extent of your treatment. However, if multiple teeth need to be replaced, your surgeon will perform a multiple-tooth implant. There is a chance that the surgeon would be able to perform all of these implants at the same time.

The type of implant that your surgeon may use can vary. Here are some different options that your surgeon has:

  • Endosteal implants: These are the most common types of implants that rely on the use of a cylinder or screw that is inserted into the jawbone. The implant will hold the replacement tooth, which would be connected to it using an abutment. If you have bridges, the surgeon may opt for this type of implant.
  • Subperiosteal implants: Instead of being implanted in your jawbone, this implant is affixed on or above it. Here, the surgeon implants a metal post beneath your gum that holds the replacement tooth. The post would stick through your gum. Aesthetically, this may not be the best option, although it may be necessary when you do not have enough Jawbone to hold the implant.

Your surgeon will perform a comprehensive evaluation before determining which type of implant is best for you. Their decision would be based on the health of your jawbone and the ability to support implants.

Other Procedures That Use Dental Implants

Other procedures may rely on the use of dental implants. For example, you may miss some of your jawbones because of gum disease or your mouth’s natural appearance. You would need to have enough healthy jawbone to support an implant. Your surgeon could perform a procedure to augment the bone in your jaw to allow you to have an implant in the future.

You may not have enough bone in the upper back part of your jaw to support an implant. This is a common place where either bone loss or insufficient bone occurs. Your doctor could perform a sinus lift to allow them to perform a bone augmentation in this region so your mouth can support implants.

Finally, your existing jawbone could be too narrow to support implants. The doctor could perform a ridge expansion by adding bone graft material to a small space along the top of your jaw.

You have various options for dental implants. Do not make any assumptions that dental implants may not be possible for you based on the current state of your mouth. There are things that your surgeon can do to facilitate new teeth when you need them. All you need to do is schedule a consultation with a surgeon so they can help you evaluate your options.
